നിര്‍മ്മാണം പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കി സാധാന സാമഗ്രികള്‍ കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ് തന്നെ തകര്‍ച്ച അഭിമുഖീകരിച്ചിരുന്ന പുതിയ കാലത്തെ പാലങ്ങള്‍ക്കുമുന്നില്‍ തലയെടുപ്പോടെ നില്‍ക്കുന്നതാണ് ആറര പതിറ്റാണ്ട് പിന്നിട്ട കുറ്റിപ്പുറം പാലം. നിളക്ക് കുറുകെ പ്രകൃതിയുടെ സമ്പൂര്‍ണ്ണ സൗന്ദര്യത്തെ പുല്‍കി നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ഈ പാലം ഇന്നും ആരോഗ്യ ദൃഡഗാത്രമാണ്. ഈ പാലത്തിന്റെ നിര്‍മ്മാണ വിസ്മയങ്ങളിലേക്ക് കണോടിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ കാണാമായിരുന്ന പൊന്നാനി സ്പര്‍ശമാണ് എഞ്ചിനിയർ അബ്ദുള്‍ അസീസ്. പാലത്തിന്റെ ശില്‍പ്പികളില്‍ പൊന്നാനിയെ അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തിയ സാങ്കേതിക വിദഗ്ദന്‍.

ചെന്നൈ ഡിണ്ടി കോളേജില്‍ നിന്ന് എഞ്ചിനിയറിംഗ് ഡിഗ്രി കഴിഞ്ഞെത്തിയ ഇരുപത്തഞ്ചുകാരനായ അബ്ദുൽ അസീസിന് കുറ്റിപ്പുറം പാലത്തിന്റെ സൈറ്റില്‍ ജൂനിയര്‍ എഞ്ചിനീയറായി നിയമനം ലഭിച്ചു. നൂറു രൂപയാണ് അന്ന് ശമ്പളം. 1949 മെയ് 8ന് അന്നത്തെ മദ്രാസ് ഗവണ്‍മെന്റിന്റെ പൊതുമരാമത്ത് മന്ത്രി എം ഭക്തവത്സലം കുറ്റിപ്പുറം പാലത്തിന് കല്ലിട്ടു. ചെന്നൈയിലെ ദി മോഡേണ്‍ ഹൗസിംങ് കണ്‍സ്ട്രക്ഷന്‍ ആന്റ് പ്രോപ്പര്‍ട്ടീസ് (എം എച്ച് സി പി) ലിമിറ്റഡ് പാലം പണിതീര്‍ത്തു. 1953 നവംബര്‍ 11 ന് മരാമത്തു മന്ത്രി ആര്‍ ഷണ്‍മുഖ രാജശ്വേര സേതുപതി പാലം തുറന്നുകൊടുത്തു. അതിനുമുമ്പ് കോഴിക്കോട്ടേക്ക് പോയിരുന്നത് ഷൊര്‍ണ്ണൂര്‍ വഴിയാണ്.

ഒന്നര വർഷം മുൻപ് രോഗബാധിതനായി കിടപ്പിലാകുന്നത് വരെയും എഞ്ചിനിയർ അബ്ദുൽ അസീസിന്റെ ഓര്‍മ്മകളിൽ പാലം പണിയുടെ കാലം നിറഞ്ഞു നിന്നിരുന്നു. പുഴയോരത്ത് ഓലക്കുടിൽ വെച്ചുകെട്ടി എഞ്ചിനിയർമാരും തൊഴിലാളികളും താമസിച്ചാണ് നിർമ്മാണ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയത്. അബ്ദുൽ അസീസിന്റെ വീട് 20 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ മാത്രം ദൂരെ ആയിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും വീട്ടില്‍ പോയിവരാന്‍ അനുവദമില്ലായിരുന്നു. പാലം പണിയുടെ ചീഫ് എഞ്ചനീയര്‍ ഡബ്ല്യ എച്ച് നമ്പ്യാരായിരുന്നു. പി ടി നാരായണന്‍ നായര്‍ സൂപ്രണ്ടിംഗ് എഞ്ചിനീയറായിരുന്നു. ഇ കൃഷ്ണന്‍, വി നാരായണമേനോന്‍, ബാലകൃഷ്ണമേനോന്‍, ഒ ബാലനാരായണന്‍ എന്നിവരൊക്കെ അസീസിന്റെ സഹപ്രവര്‍ത്തകരായിരുന്നു.

മലബാറിലെ ഏറ്റവും നീളമുളള പാലങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് കുറ്റിപ്പുറത്തേത്. എട്ടേകാല്‍ ലക്ഷം രൂപയുടെ എസ്റ്റിമേറ്റ് തയ്യാറാക്കിയ പാലം 23 ലക്ഷത്തിന് പണി തീര്‍ന്നു. പതിനൊന്ന് സ്പാനുകളുളള പാലത്തിന്റെ നീളം 1183 അടി, വീതി 22 അടി. ആഴമേറിയ കിണറിന്റെ താഴ്ച. നദിയുടെ അടിത്തട്ടില്‍ നിന്ന് 82 അടി.

ആയിരത്തിഇരുനൂറ് രൂപ അടിസ്ഥാന ശമ്പളത്തോടെ അസീസ് സംസ്ഥാന പൊതുമരാമത്ത് വകുപ്പില്‍ നിന്ന് സൂപ്രണ്ടിങ് എഞ്ചിനീയറായി 1978-ല്‍ വിരമിച്ചു.
